From ICU to Impact: My Journey into the GPN Specialist Practice Qualification

La Toya De Freitas 23 Apr 2025

In this Blog La Toya De Freitas talks about her journey as a GPN and how she enrolled onto the SPQ course.

In 2018, I transitioned from intensive care to general practice nursing (GPN) to make a long-term impact. A conversation with a nurse during my daughter's vaccination sparked my interest in advanced practice nursing. I found a trainee GPN role on the NHS Jobs website and applied, despite my doubts. Surprisingly, I was shortlisted and, after overcoming my nerves, was offered the position.

The role was like an apprenticeship, with paid work, university study, and mentorship. I loved the idea of preventing illness rather than just reacting to it. My first GPN job was close to home, which was great for family life. However, imposter syndrome hit hard. I dedicated extra hours to learning, joined webinars, and invested in my professional development, viewing my career as a business.

The journey was challenging. Statutory maternity pay was a shock compared to NHS benefits, but we managed. Advocating for professional development was tough, often facing hurdles with manager approvals. I joined a focus group to improve this process and secured funding for CPD courses and a diabetes diploma, completed during the pandemic while working part-time and raising my children.
I share this because many nurses struggle to find time for training, yet it’s crucial for growth and feeling valued. Employers can fund training, but personal investment is often necessary. I found a part-time role with the Severe Asthma Team, applied despite my nerves, and got the job. This role was transformative, and I also joined the 九游体育 Forum Committee.

That year was a turning point, solidifying my belief that general practice was where I belonged. After the asthma project, I returned to general practice but sought more flexibility. I applied for a facilitator role with an Integrated Care Board (ICB) but was unsuccessful. However, this led to a pivotal opportunity: a fully funded place on the GPN Specialist Practitioner Qualification (SPQ) course.

I researched the course and discussed it with the GP partners, explaining its benefits and the need for protected study time. They agreed, recognizing the advantages of an advanced GPN role. Joining the SPQ program has been one of the best decisions of my career, boosting my confidence and expanding my understanding of general practice operations.

Through the SPQ, I’ve engaged with various healthcare teams, launched quality improvement projects, and taken on palliative and cancer care reviews. This experience has reinforced the idea that everyone is a leader and that our voices matter. I plan to share more about the challenges of accessing the SPQ and potential solutions.

For now, I encourage anyone considering their next career step to explore the SPQ, as it can be a transformative opportunity.
